Australian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA)

The Australian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) is the peak representative body for over 15,000 medical students in Australia. As one of the 20 council members, the FMSS elects a representative every year to attend national council, represent each of the medical students within Flinders University and partake in primary decisions made by the council.

The key mandate of AMSA is to connect, inform and represent.

Core operations include:

Advocacy

AMSA advocates for medical students through policy development, advocacy campaigns and representation to governments, universities and relevant medical and medicopolitical bodies. AMSA formulates and reviews policy through local ThinkTANKS and subcommittees, which are chaired by local AMSA Representatives, then relayed to national council.

Events, programs and projects

Medical students from across the country are able to connect with peers by participating in AMSA’s renowned educational, social, well-being, leadership events and programs. The AMSA Representative for FMSS has the task of promoting AMSA within the Flinders Medical School: annually the AMSA Representative will help organise the AMSA Convention and GHC (Global Health Conference) delegations.

Global and rural health

Global health, rural health and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health are important focus areas for AMSA and its members. Specific opportunities for medical students to become actively involved while still studying are provided via AMSA’s popular Global Health Network.

Publications

AMSA produces a variety of useful and informative publications which enhance communication between Australian medical students and assist their journey throughout medical school.
